Raft System

The raft system is an interesting hydroponic growing method mostly used in commercial greenhouses for lettuce and short stature crops.  They are also a popular choice among DIY growers for their price, effectiveness and for its easy construction. Raft Systems are basically Styrofoam sheets populated with plant baskets that float on the surface of the nutrient bath. The systems works by feeding air through the pump to the airstone, which in turn aerates the nutrient solution. This process circulates the water in the bath, thus providing the plant roots with vital oxygen. It is crucial in keeping the plant roots from drowning. The baskets can be filled with a variety of growing mediums; the most frequently used is LECA and perliite.

Works well for:

Short stature plants like lettuces, some flowers, salad crops and kitchen herbs.
